Whew, it’s been a minute. 👀 If you’re new, I’m Kiara. Welcome to The Lede!
When this newsletter launched, I promised that I would keep you updated on my job search. I’m thrilled to share that I got hired! To get to this point, I had to change my entire application strategy. Yup, I did it all wrong. For almost a year, I would find a job on LinkedIn, tailor my resume to the job description, write a cover letter, and then apply through the company portal.
Where did that get me? Absolutely nowhere!
The few times I was lucky enough to get a response, it was a canned rejection from a no-reply email. Seeing all of those rejections pile up definitely affected my confidence. I often wondered if my degree was a waste of time and money— so much so that I browsed Indeed for fast food job openings. (Note: I applied online to several of America’s finest fast dining establishments and I’m still waiting for responses months later. Twas my first and clearest indication that neither I nor my credentials were the issue. And to be clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with working in fast food. But I was applying, not out of financial need or desperation, but because I wanted to wallow in self-pity. Don’t make that mistake!)
After sifting through the rubble and finding my confidence, I stopped, reflected, and pivoted to a new strategy that has been vastly more fruitful. This is what I did:
I joined several networking Slack channels. Now, you might have to do a bit of digging to find a Slack channel that matches your specific interest but I joined the Product Marketing Alliance and now defunct, #HireBlack Slack channels.
I continued using LinkedIn and Slack to find job openings.
If I found a job on my own, I searched Slack to find someone who works at the company. If I couldn’t find an employee on Slack, I used my LinkedIn Premium account to send InMail messages to recruiters and employees.
Most importantly, I prayed and was patient. In retrospect, I’m so fortunate for all of the rejections I received. It sounds cliché, I know. But had it not been for all of those rejections, I might have accepted a less-than-stellar offer. Instead, I now work for a fully-remote purpose-driven company that values and uplifts employees. I wake up every day excited for work and excited to learn. My prayer is that this newsletter helps you find something similarly fulfilling.
By adopting these strategies, I nailed down interviews at three companies in just three weeks! Immediately, the impact, visibility, and quality of my applications improved. If you need help getting started on this, please reach out. I’m more than willing to help. 🤗
As always, if you like what you read today, please share it with a friend! Now, let’s get to the jobs.
